Ring 41 Remembers Sylvester Adamski (1926-2014)

Today I report the sad news of the passing of one of Ring 41's longest serving members. Sylvester Adamski passed away on Feburary 28th., 2014. I will have more to say shortly... -DrS

As reported by Richard Mehring & Andy and Angie Pugens.

Fans and friends called Sylvester Adamski a conjurer and magician.

Performing under the names Si Adams and Silas throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area, he fooled audiences with a combination of sleight of hand and rapid-fire chatter, said his niece, Deborah Czysz of Greenfield.

Adamski died Feb. 28 at the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 88.

After serving as a radio operator for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific, Adamski returned to Milwaukee and completed a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, his niece said.

His love of magic eventually drew him out of a career in social services, Czysz said. He performed from the 1950s through the late 1990s. Card tricks were his favorite. But it was nonstop tricks of all kinds when her uncle came to visit, she said. Her father, Alexander, was the magician’s brother.

He was always pulling money out of my ear,” Czysz recalled. Sometimes he would give her a coin he claimed to have found in her ear.

How great was it having a magician for an uncle,” she said. “One year, for my birthday, he put on a whole magic show.

Part of Adamski’s appeal was performing a 30-minute magic act with whatever objects he could carry in a cigar box. In addition to cards, the contents always included a rope. “He cut the rope in pieces,” Czysz said. “Or it sure looked like he was cutting up the rope in his hand. But it would still be in one piece.

She would ask how he pulled off such tricks. His answer was always the same. He would tell her a magician never reveals his secrets, Czysz said. Adamski even published a book, “Snappy Rope Patter,” to guide young musicians in the art of stringing together one-liners with the aim of distracting audiences from closely watching the tricks performed on stage.

Adamski was a 56-year member of the Society of American Magicians and was elected Milwaukee chapter president in 1964. He also was a member of the Houdini Club of Wisconsin and the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

In addition to Czysz, Adamski is survived by other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 10th at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 21731 Spring St., Union Grove.
