Next Ring Meeting

"I put Nick Trost's kids though college with all the packet tricks I've bought since 1975!"
- David Swoboda

Packet Trick Night and a Tribute to Sneaky Pete

At our next meeting we will be exploring the wonderful, magical world of "packet tricks." A staple of many magicians, packet tricks have been a favorite of magicians and laymen alike. If you know the names of Emerson & West, Nick Trost, Jim Temple, Ron Frost, or Phil Goldstein then you know what I mean.

Bring your favorite Packet Trick

Brush up on your "Counts, Cuts, Moves and Subtlety" and show the membership your finest packet work.

As a special bonus, Jon Hughett and David Swoboda will show two of Sneaky Pete's favorite packet tricks. David will perform the Emerson & West classic, Color Monte, using Pete's cards from the Safe House. And Jon will show us "Larry West's" Eight Ball! Pete performed these two tricks nightly and always got great reactions.

You have your mission. Practice up for the next meeting on the 24th. If you don't have a packet trick, bring your favorite trick to perform. Or, stop out at Big Guy's and pick a new packet trick for your act!

"The collected works of Nick Trost should be in every magicians library!"
—David Swoboda

I.B.M. Ring 41 will host a lecture by Sean Masterson on Wednesday March 27th.

"Masterson’s sleight-of-hand tricks with tales to boot are spellbinding"

- The Chicago Tribune Sean Masterson Lecture

"Trial and Error - making magic one step at a time!"

I plan to reveal my pet secrets from my stage show "Magic Matinee" (now playing at Theater Wit) and explain the trials and the errors that I experienced to get them to performance level. It will be all stage effects including visual appearances, color changes and mentalism. The routines all use simple props procured at a hobby shop or Target. I will teach all the ins and outs of these routines that I use everywhere: libraries, schools, living rooms, picnics, classrooms, and theaters.

"All about Sean Masterson"

Sean received a deck of Marshall Brodien's T.V. Magic Cards on his 7th birthday. Since then he has performed hundreds of shows for theatres, corporate functions, family events and for 7 year old birthday parties where he delights in inspiring future magicians!

His performances have always reflected his dual interest in magic and theater leading him to study acting at Illinois State University. While there he picked up a 2nd major in French which explains his appearances at Festimagic in Paris and The International Theater Festival of Grenoble.

Sean has performed his family magic show Vaudeville Magic in numerous Chicago area theatres including The Mayne Stage, The Music Box Theatre, The Actor's Gym and The Acorn Theater. His close-up magic has been seen at many corporate and social events including Abbott Laboratories , The Chicago Architecture Foundation, Copia Capitol and The Driehaus Museum.

"His magic does more than puzzle the mind, it creates a sense of wonder and excitement."
—Bill Kurtis, television journalist

- Lawrence Van Gelder, New York Times

Mentalist Marc Salem brings his interactive stage show to The Rep for an experience that will leave you astounded, dumbfounded, and believing the unbelievable! Using psychological techniques, a sharp eye for human nature, a quick wit, and more than 20 years of close study, Mr. Salem creates a mystifying, often hilarious show that explores the depths and true capabilities of the human mind.

Artistic Director Mark Clements take: How to describe brilliant, witty mentalist Marc Salem and Mind Over Milwaukee? It’s not a play, it’s not a musical, and it’s certainly not a magic act. So let’s call it an entertainment, tailor- made for a Milwaukee audience. Jaws will drop as Marc separates truth from lies in increasingly amazing ways—and the audience wonders, “How did he do that?!”

Marc Salem has been a student of the human mind for over 30 years. As an academic he holds advanced degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and New York University, and has been on faculty of several major universities for close to two decades. He is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on non-verbal communication. How the mind creates reality and meaning has been his major focus. As a researcher Professor Salem has traveled the globe exploring the mind and its potential. He was a director of research at Sesame Street studying the development and nature of the mental process. As an entertainer Marc has performed around the world, astounding and entertaining millions. His show Mind Games concluded two extended runs on Broadway to both critical and popular acclaim. The Sydney Opera House, the Edinburgh Festival and Singapore's Esplanade have also hosted extended runs of Mind Games.

He has been featured on the The O'Reilly Factor, Montel, Maury, CNN, and has been a frequent guest on Regis. He has had two network television specials, with more to come. Marc has also completed 3 sell-out seasons in London. He is a regular guest on Court TV, and was profiled on 60 Minutes by Mike Wallace.

The critics love Marc's show:

Mind-blowing is the only way to describe Marc Salem's Mind Games. This is a one man tour de force as Marc wows and charms his audience for an hour and a half with his incredible ability to read minds."

Bill Cook Lecture at Ring 41

I.B.M. Ring 41 will host a lecture by Bill Cook on Wednesday November 28th., 2012.

Bill Cook is one of the most talented young magicians I have ever seen. Besides being a flawless magician, he is a great entertainer! Personality, originality, creativity; add them up and you have Bill Cook!

- Lance Burton

Bill Cook is the Future of Magic. A three-time winner of the Lance Burton award of excellence, and having just won Second Place in the world for his close up magic in the World Magic Seminar International Close-Up Competition held in Las Vegas, Bill took First Place and the Prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Chicago Magic Competition. Bill was the youngest competitor.

Bill is one of Six featured Teens in the Brand New Award Winning Documentary entitled Make Believe. Winner of the Best Documentary award at the LA Film Festival, and the Audience Choice award at the Austin Film Festival, Make Believe is guaranteed to be one of the best films you'll ever watch.

Bill's talents include a wide variety of magic, ranging from intimate close-up magic, to walk-around magic, to birthday party magic, and all the way up to stage performances.

For Bill, magic is not just a career, but a way of life. He is a believer that magic is a way to connect to people. Magic breaks all language barriers. He believes that magic can be incorporated into almost any aspect of a person’s life, because magic is all around us.

And of course, the motto that Bill lives by:

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, none will suffice. - Dunninger
